Another terrific match to be involved in, the match lasting over 3 hours.
I knew that to have any chance against Chris I would have to perform really well.
Chris has been on fire all season and was a clear favourite to reach yet another final.

Frame 1: Wayne going in front early with Chris coming back with a lovely 35 break. Through some great safety Wayne seized the initiative and went 20 in front with 22 remaining. Chris eventually clearing the table against the run of play to take the opener.

Frame 2: Very much the reverse of frame 1 with Chris having the early lead from a 30 break. Wayne coming back strongly and laying some difficult snookers, Wayne eventually taking the frame with a 30 plus break.

Frame 3: Safety being a key factor in this frame with Wayne keeping Chris at bay with some excellent safety play, not allowing the dangerous Chris to get a hold in the game. A solid 32 from Chris not enough to prevent Wayne from taking the frame and the lead.

Frame 4: Again Wayne playing some excellent safety and keeping Chris under pressure. A solid 40 break from Wayne adding to a good lead. As ever it didn't end there. Chris giving it 100% to get back into the frame with some brilliant safety and tactical play. Wayne wasn't to be denied this time though and more great safety got Wayne over the line and into the final.

Chris is such a great player, so difficult to play against with a terrific all round game.
He has had an amazing season, winning just about everything.
Always a pleasure to play against and a gent in victory and defeat.

Thanks for the game Chris and good luck in your remaining matches.

Singles League

April 15, 2019, 06:57:57 PM by John Fountain | Views: 113 | Comments: 2

This was an extraordinary match against one of the toughest contenders in Nottingham Snooker.

Frame 1 - Forgettable frame for both of us really, missing simple balls and not taking our chances but Wayne dug in and took the frame on the Brown.

Frame 2 - I managed to pull it back to levels with the aid of a 32 to ease the pressure and relief of having a frame on the board.

Frame 3 - I was looking good to win the frame being 46 points up with only three reds remaining. A misplaced safety from me gave wayne a chance to pot a red and he went on with an absolutely perfect clearance of 51 to win on the black. This was a massive kick in my teeth and I felt guttered to lose the frame from being so far ahead.

Frame 4 - Wayne now brimming with confidence after his sublime clearance started off by knocking a long red in making a 16 just running out of position to carry on with many reds now in the open. Alot of top quality safety play proceeded from both of us, somehow i managed to gain a healthy lead picking the odd red and colour off along the way for Wayne to wave the white flag with all the colours remaining. 2-2.

Frame 5 - After shaking hands and wishing each other luck for the final frame, Wayne turned in to a Professional with near perfect snooker and gained a 40 point lead quickly without a reply from me. Needing to turn the game around i played a few decent safety shots, managing to hide behind the bulk colours and gain some control back. Wayne left a chance for me and I made a 41 to level the frame again. Phew! More top quality safety play continued and I gained a 14 point lead. Eventually i dropped the white tight behind the green with the last red behind the black full distance of the table apart. This left Wayne in trouble missing the red twice and hitting the black both times. Another tussle on the green when unfortunately it landed short over the middle pocket for me to pot leaving Wayne needing a snooker. Wayne still naturally trying his best to get a snooker which thankfully ended as i rolled the brown over the pocket down the rail for it to drop in. The handshake soon followed with a sigh of relief from myself.

Genuinely have not played a match like that for a long time. It was one of them matches where both players equally deserved to win. Wayne plays the right shot every time which is very difficult to play against, yesterday was just my day and managed to pip the victory. Hard lines Wayne, i look forward to many more matches of that standard with you.

Joe Reynolds wins the 2019 Phyllis Bell Trophy

Joe Reynolds won the Trophy and qualified for the Alan Cunningham Champions Trophy playing solidly throughout the day.

Joe beat Nav Hussain in the final.  In the first frame he established a 30 point lead early on and held onto it right to the end. In the second frame Joe had a 28 point lead with 35 on.  However Nav pinched it with a great 34 clearance. In the last frame Joe had a 20 something lead with the last red on nav had a good go at making another steal landing slightly awkward with the green on its spot which made it very hard to get on the brown near the black cushion. Nav narrowly missed getting on the brown and laid a good snooker instead. Joe escaped that and a few shots later sealed the frame and match.
